ABOUT US
The MIMA Sleep Disorders Center is a state of the art, four bedroom facility located in Palm Bay, Florida offering a patient friendly environment with ample and convenient parking as an alternative to hospital based facilities.

Our service is not limited to only sleep disordered breathing problems (Sleep Apnea), but includes diagnosis and treatment for the full spectrum (the International Classification of Sleep Disorders coding manual lists 84 differrent diagnoses of sleep problems) of sleep disorders like periodic limb movement disorder, narcolepsy, REM behavior disorder, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, and bruxism (teeth grinding).

PRIOR TO A SLEEP STUDY (POLYSOMNOGRAPHY)
Patients will first meet a Sleep Center Physician for a consultation visit and examination. It is helpful if a spouse (or close family member who has observed you during sleep) accompanies you. They often can provide detailed information about what happens during your sleep. Based on the examination and information gathered during the consultation, the physician will present his recommendations. These may include treatment and/or testing. If a sleep study is indicated, and you agree to testing, the Sleep Disorders Center will be notified.

SCHEDULING A SLEEP STUDY (POLYSOMNOGRAPHY)
The MIMA Sleep Disorders Center routinely conducts over-night sleep studies Sunday night thru Friday night. For patients who require daytime testing (shift workers, or patients having nap studies in addition to the overnight study), these tests are regularly performed Tuesday thru Thursday. A member of the Sleep Center staff will contact you to schedule the study.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE SLEEP CENTER
You will be greeted upon arrival by a member of our technical staff. Four of our six technical staff members are registered sleep technologists (RPSGT) with 31 years experience among them. You will be shown the facility (it looks more like a hotel room than a hospital/clinical testing room) and the procedure explained to you. Each room has a full size bed and a private restroom. Two of the four bedrooms have showers and two bedrooms have tubs with showers. Patients, particularly those who need to leave for work the next morning, can bring a change of clothes with them so that the next morning they can bathe/shower and change clothes without having to return home first. There is also an easy chair and a television in each room which has VHS and DVD capability to pass the time prior to bedtime and during the day for patients having nap studies performed. If you are remaining for nap studies you will be provided with breakfast and lunch from a local restaurant.

After your orientation to the facility, various electrodes and sensors will be applied in order to monitor your brain activity, blood oxygen level, muscle activity, breathing, heart rhythm and heart rate. Nothing about this procedure is painful, and once in bed you will be able to turn and move about in order to make yourself comfortable. There is an intercom and video system in the room and the technician will be able to observe you and hear you during the night, so if there is anything that you want or need you just have to speak out and the tech will be able to respond immediately.

OBTAINING RESULTS OF TESTING
Your Sleep Center Physician will interpret the results of your sleep study, usually within a week of testing, and will contact you to discuss the findings, treatment options, and/or recommendations.

SLEEP DISORDERS CENTER FOLLOW-UP (CASE MANAGEMENT)
A member of the Sleep Disorders Center’s case management team (senior technician) will contact you periodically after your study to check on your progress. It is our goal to help you achieve success in treating and resolving your sleep issues. During these contacts we will be asking “how things are going”; “has there been improvement”; “are you having problems with your recommended treatment/therapy”. Usually we can help with solutions for common problems people encounter with therapeutic equipment or appliances. If the solution requires the involvement of the physician, home care company, etc., we will bring the matter to their attention for assistance.

INSURANCE COVERAGE
Most insurance providers cover both the consultation visit with the Sleep Center Physician and the Sleep Study (Polysomnography) subject to co-pay and deductible requirements of your contract. It may be necessary for your primary care physician to provide the initial referral request and authorization for the consultation visit with the Sleep Center Physician. If pre-authorization for testing is required, the MIMA staff will apply for that authorization prior to your scheduled test.
